Certified Ultrasonic Technician

Description:

Performs Ultrasonic Examinations on structural steel weldments. All ultrasonic testing performed on NYSDOT structures must be done by NYSDOT Certified UT Technicians.

Certification Requirements:

An applicant must pass the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Ultrasonic Testing Technician exam to be certified to conduct ultrasonic testing on New York State bridge projects. Certification must be renewed every 5 years.

Age Requirement:

There is no minimum age requirement.

Education and Experience:

The applicant must meet the minimum requirements as outlined in ASNT-TC-1A (2016) for a UT level II ultrasonic testing technician. A minimum of 2 years of field experience is recommended prior to taking the exam.

Examination Requirements:

Must pass the Ultrasonic Test administered by the New York State Department of Transportation.

Examination Description:

The examination consists of three parts: a closed book multiple-choice section (25%), an open book problem-solving session (25%), and a practical exam involving the examination of welded steel plates (50%). The total length of all three exam parts is 6 hours. Applicants must score a minimum of 70 on each of the three parts but must achieve a minimum overall score of 80 when the three respective scores are averaged together in order to be certified.

Limited Permit Requirements:

No limited permit is issued.
