Blaster

Description

A blaster directs or personally handles, sets and detonates explosives in construction excavation, demolition or mining. There are six specific categories of certificates of competence:

• Class A – The holder may be in charge of any above or below ground blasting operation, included in Class B and C; excluding class D, E & F.
• Class B – The holder may be in charge of any above ground blasting operation, e.g. general construction, open surface excavation, quarries, etc; excluding class A, C, D, E & F.
• Class C - The holder may be in charge of any below ground blasting operation, e.g. underground mines, tunneling, etc; excluding class A, B, D, E & F.
• Class D – The holder may be in charge of any blasting operation associated with demolition of buildings and/or other structures.
• Class E – The holder may be in charge of any blasting operation associated with seismic prospecting.
• Class F – The holder may be in charge of any blasting operation associated with special uses where the total weight of explosives does not exceed 50 pounds.

Separate certificates are issued by the New York State Department of Labor to those who manufacture or sell explosives, and to those who own, transport or possess explosives.

Certification Requirements

All persons seeking to become a licensed blaster functioning in New York State must submit an application to the New York State Department of Labor. Applicants must be physically capable of performing the tasks involved. Applicants must go through a background check by having their fingerprints scanned at a contracted location.

Age Requirement

Applicants seeking to function as a licensed blaster in New York State must be at least 21 years old.

Experience

Applicants seeking to become a licensed blaster in New York State must have 3 years of practical blasting experience, under supervision of a currently certified blaster. An applicant's experience also must include handling and use of explosives, and knowledge of safety precautions.
